More Trees are recruiting new Trustees
Introduction:
At More Trees, we have a mission to inspire and enable each other to come together to grow, plant and care for climate resilient trees. We create opportunities to learn about and value trees unlocking the wellbeing benefits this brings, and the connections that are created between our community of volunteers and the natural environment.
Since 2008, we’ve planted over 16,000 trees and now grow our own saplings from seeds collected locally. We operate 17 community tree nurseries, in various settings including schools, parks and community spaces. We have three amazing employees, and an army of committed volunteers. Our mission is to grow our own trees with local provenance, fostering a community of volunteers, and expanding our impact. We are at an exciting stage, accepting larger funding and looking to grow our team, and our trustees are key to this journey. We have moved to our new site in Twerton which acts as a central hub for our operations. Here we grow trees from seed collected around the local area and then distributed to our network of community tree nurseries around Bath. When ready these trees are planted in small planting schemes around the city and surrounding areas adding to the local treescape. Our values are centered on being open, caring, collaborative and regenerative.
A message from Lewis Morrison (Chair of Trustees)
More Trees is more than just a charity collecting seed, growing on trees, and planting them out in the land. But don’t let me ignore the fact that this specific process is absolutely critical to the successional conservation, protection and resilience of our local treescape and wider environment, here in Bath and North East Somerset. Only in a very few local spots around the UK are local people coming together in such a way to forage the local countryside for old, notable and resilient trees, and processing them to become the trees of the future. More Trees in particular undertakes a high volume of this critical work, and in many ways is a pioneer in this field, evolving quickly as it does so.
But More Trees does more than this. It brings good people together, seeking contact, community and engagement. It creates and evolves a skills base for local people. It engages partners and stakeholders on the critical mission we share. It excels at technical tree production. It communicates with schools, children, adults, and helps foster a sense of collective common cause.
At a time when our environment, and our society, is subject to myriad challenges, More Trees is a bastion of hope, help and harmony. Given how precious this small but mighty charity is, and how valued our volunteers and staff are, we need caring and capable hands to join the Board of Trustees to take us on the next step on our journey, to deliver our core mission of delivering dynamic and diverse tree-rich landscapes that regenerate the environment, our communities and the natural world.
A message from Mary-Jane Wilshire (Director)
As an incoming Director, I have recognised the vital importance of building the capacity of our governance to reflect and align with our values of collaboration, transparency, care and regeneration.
Starting in May 2025, I was immediately struck by the special way volunteers engage in our work. The volunteers support us in nurturing trees through the growing cycle, from gathering seeds, sewing, to planting and aftercare. Carrying out these tasks seems to have a transformational effect on people. It opens hearts and minds to the rhythms of our natural environment. It deepens our connection to and understanding of trees and also creates a wonderful sense of community. I have been genuinely moved by how bonded volunteers have become while working at the Hub and the wider network of nurseries. They have been brought together by a shared passion for, and commitment to, growing trees for biodiversity, climate resilience and a need to ‘just do something’ positive. As a result, they have formed meaningful connections with the tree nurseries, the staff and each other.
I am sure this is why so many volunteers care about More Trees and have worked tirelessly supporting our work. We are looking for Trustees that understand this too. We want Trustees that will work with our small but dedicated staff team to shape More Trees governance and strategy, in an open and inclusive approach.
The role of a Trustee at More Trees:
As a trustee, you will play a vital role in ensuring More Trees achieves its vision. We want enthusiastic contributors who share our values and have a strong interest in what we do. You will be responsible for:
- Making collective decisions on the strategy and direction of the charity in accordance with transparent, fair and collaborative principles and approaches.
- Ensuring the governance of More Trees is conducted in line with charity law and regulations.
- Ensuring we stay true to our charitable objectives and organisational values.
- Supporting in various ways, depending on individual knowledge and experience.
If you have at least 2 of the following capabilities, we would love to hear from you:
- Insight and understanding of the value that volunteers bring to More Trees. As well as experience of designing and implementing inclusive and effective work environments and / or decision-making structures.
- A love of trees and a commitment to nature recovery which has been demonstrated by leadership of positive change at a local community or strategic level.
- An understanding and proficiency in financial management and / or charity law and governance regulation.
- You have lived and worked in Twerton or the surrounding area for several years and bring a strong understanding of the Voluntary and Community Sector in this area.
Ultimately, we are looking for people with a passion and commitment to join us. We can provide support and training, so if you are interested in our work and keen to get involved, but not sure if you have the right experience, do get in touch for an initial chat. Please email Mary-Jane Wilshire, Director at More Trees mary-jane@moretrees.earth.
Please open the links to the Trustee and Treasurer role descriptions for further details on tasks, expectations and requirements.
If you wish to apply, we invite you to express an interest by sending a CV and a cover letter. We would like you to outline your relevant experience and skills that align with the Trustee role requirements. Expression of Interest should be emailed to mary-jane@moretree.earth no later than Monday 21st July.
We will then invite you to participate in an informal learning conversation with organisational representatives including staff, volunteers and the Interim Chair. We have framed this as a ‘learning conversation’ as we anticipate a balance of questions between candidates and organisational representatives.
Key dates:
Submission of Expression of Interest by Monday 21st July.
- Learning conversations week beginning Monday 28th July.
- Appointment of Trustees in August.
